Understanding PA, SPF, and PPD: A Guide to Sun Protection

With growing consumer awareness about sun protection, brands that offer high-quality, effective sunscreens can gain a competitive edge in the skincare industry.

At Fuyue Biotech, we specialize in developing high-quality private label sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection while catering to various skin needs.

What Are UVA and UVB Rays?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is categorized into UVA and UVB rays, both of which can harm the skin in different ways:

  • UVA (Ultraviolet A): Longer wavelengths penetrate deep into the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging, wrinkles, and tanning.

  • UVB (Ultraviolet B): Shorter wavelengths with higher energy cause surface-level damage, resulting in sunburns and an increased risk of skin cancer.

To effectively protect the skin, sunscreens are formulated with varying levels of UVA and UVB protection. This is where PA, SPF, and PPD ratings come into play.

What Is PA (Protection Grade of UVA)?

PA is a rating system developed in Japan to indicate the level of protection against UVA rays. It is commonly found in Asian sunscreens and is denoted by a “+” sign:

  • PA+: Some protection against UVA rays

  • PA++: Moderate protection

  • PA+++: High protection

  • PA++++: Highest level of UVA protection

Since UVA exposure contributes to skin aging, hyperpigmentation, and long-term damage, selecting a sunscreen with a high PA rating is important, especially for daily wear.

What Is SPF (Sun Protection Factor)?

SPF measures a sunscreen’s effectiveness in protecting against UVB rays, which cause sunburn.

The SPF number represents how much longer the skin can be exposed to sunlight without burning compared to unprotected skin:

  • SPF 15: Blocks approximately 93% of UVB rays

  • SPF 30: Blocks around 97%

  • SPF 50: Blocks about 98%

  • SPF 50+: Offers the highest level of UVB protection

While higher SPF provides longer protection, reapplication every two hours is still necessary for optimal sun defense.

What Is PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening)?

PPD is a European system that measures UVA protection based on how long the skin takes to tan under UVA exposure. It correlates with the PA rating as follows:

  • PPD 2-4PA+

  • PPD 4-8PA++

  • PPD 8-16PA+++

  • PPD 16+PA++++

PPD is particularly useful for those concerned about pigmentation, dark spots, and premature aging.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen?

When selecting a sunscreen, look for:

  • Broad-spectrum protection: Covers both UVA (PA/PPD) and UVB (SPF)

  • SPF 30 or higher: Recommended for daily use

  • PA+++ or higher: Essential for long-term skin health

  • Water-resistant formulas: Ideal for outdoor activities

  • Lightweight textures: Suitable for daily wear without clogging pores
